Roman face cream
It has been dubbed 'Maximum Factorius': scientists have unearthed a 1,800-year-old pot of
Roman face cream - and discovered that it feels quite pleasant, and uses many of the ingredients
found in cosmetics today, says The Independent.
The sealed pot was found in Southwark, London, preserved under thick layers of mud. Analysis showed it contained around 40% boiled animal fats, 40% starch, and tin oxide. Roman face creams also contained lead, although the dangers were known, suggesting that even then women were expected to suffer for their beauty.
A replica "felt greasy initially, owing to the fat melting as a result of body heat", said the researchers from the University of Bristol. However, "this was quickly taken over by the smooth, powdery texture created by the starch".
